FINE PERIOD PAINTINGS and DRAWINGS
ANDREA FISHER FINE ART

ANDREA FISHER FINE ART offers
an exceptional selection of original paintings, and drawings, from 19th century French Academic Artists, most of whom exhibited and received medals at the Salons of Paris. The majority of the artists represented in our Gallery have pieces housed in the permanent collections of the world's most important Fine Art Museums and private collections.

Andrea Fisher's Lecture/Presentation presented in Bucks County Pa. will be presented again at locations and dates to be announced. The lecture titled Exquisite French Period Art and Antiques: A Journey through Time, emphasizes the 18th c. French Rococo Artists through the 19th c. French Academics; as well as their influence on the decorative arts, furniture, literature and culture. The influence of Enlightenment thinking and concepts of Beauty and the Sublime, along with stories about the artist's life and work, are explored within a cultural and historic context; bringing the textures, tones and colors of the past back to its beautiful vibrant life.

PIERRE CARRIER-BELLEUSE (1851-1931)
A BALLERINA

FRENCH ACADEMIC ARTIST
FINE 19th-CENTURY FRENCH PASTEL

Without its frame this exceptional, artist-signed, pastel-on-paper, laid down on canvas, measures 39 5/8 inches tall by 29 1/8 inches wide. With the frame this measure 49.25" tall by 38.75" wide. This piece beautifully represents Carrier-Belleuse's subtle use of line and color to create layers of nuance in both light and tone. It is presented in a fine custom-made, 22 karat gold-leaf, Louis XV manner Frame.

Provenance: Goupil et Comp., Paris, France

PIERRE CARRIER-BELLEUSE studied at l'Ecole des Beaux-Arts and made his debut at the Salon in 1875.  The son of the pre-eminent sculptor Albert Carrier-Belleuse,  Pierre showed promise from a young age. He was as adept in the medium of pastels (a very difficult medium to master), as he was with oils. In 1877 he received Honorable Mention for his work, and in 1899 he received a Silver Medal at the Exposition Universelle.

Below is an image of the original stamp found on the back of the canvas;
discovered while changing the frame. Buried treasure indeed!

JEAN-JOSEPH WEERTS

1847 - 1927

FRENCH ACADEMIC CLASSICAL PAINTER

Young woman with a bird and flower. Artist-signed and dated 1878, this oil on canvas measures 25.25" by 25" without its frame and comes to us directly from Paris. This pensive study of a young woman, with a bird and flower, wearing a turquoise-colored silk dress, beautifully represents this artist's concern for detail and his decorative approach to painting. It is presented in an exceptional 19th century French, 22 karat gold leaf frame. This work has been examined and authenticated by Fred Ross. Mr. Ross is only one of two acknowledged world experts on William Bouguereau.

Jean-Joseph Weerts was born in Roux, France in 1846 and lived until 1927.  He is of  Belgian descent and some academic sources list him as a Belgian painter while others state that he is in fact French.  He was honored with numerous awards and titles in his lifetime including the prestigious position of Commander of the Legion of Honor in 1913.

His paintings are part of the permanent collections in fine art museums in Europe (Musée d'Orsay, Paris), and his monumental decorative and historical paintings grace the walls of the Sorbonne and the Paris Mint.

GUSTAVE JEAN JACQUET

1846 - 1909

FRENCH ACADEMIC PAINTER

This beautiful and sensitively painted, artist signed, oil on canvas, Portrait of a Woman, by the important 19th century French Academic Painter, Gustave Jean Jacquet possesses a delicacy and timeless beauty that is typical to this artist's work. Oil on canvas, measures without the frame, 13" by 9.75". It is presented in a fine French Period, pure gold leaf, giltwood frame, and measures with its frame, 21" tall by 18" wide.

A student of William Adolphe Bouguereau, Jacquet's paintings were enthusiastically received by the late 1800's French public and art critics alike.  A salon exhibitor, he was awarded a third class medal in 1868 and a first class in 1879 and was decorated by the Legion of Honor in 1879. Jacquet's women possess a delicacy and timeless beauty and are often romantically clothed in 16th through 18th century dress. His paintings are housed in some of the most important art museums and private collections in the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. We are delighted to include this painting among our collection of Fine 19th century French Academic Art.

ALBERT DE BELLEROCHE (1864 - 1944)
FRENCH PAINTER
(Born in Wales, of French ancestry)

'Maissa:  Danseuse du ventre – Moulin Rouge’

Higher resolution images will be posted shortly

This sensual and beautifully painted oil on canvas by the French Painter Albert de Belleroche measures 21 5/8" by 13". With its period frame (which we believe is original to the piece), it measures 29" by 21". There is an inscription on the back of the stretcher, dedicating this painting to Lili. (Lili was a favorite model of Belleroche and Toulouse-Lautrec; and was also Belleroche's mistress).

This comes from a collection of Belleroche's work which is considered to be among his finest paintings to arrive on the International Art Market.

The vibrant energy of this piece bursts forth from its canvas, resonating a soulful sensuality. An exquisite painting, this must be seen in person to be fully appreciated. More about the artist below.

Albert de Belleroche, who was born in Wales, was the son of the Marquis de Belleroche, one of the most ancient French noble families who, being Huguenots, had fled to England in 1685. In 1871, after his father passed away,  he returned to Paris with his family. In Paris he studied at the famous studio of Carolus Duran where he met, and became a great friend and colleague of John Singer Sargent. Both artists are said to have influenced each others work. Belleroche exhibited alongside the Impressionists and associated with Emile Zola, Oscar Wilde, Albert Moore, Renoir, Degas, Helleu and Toulouse-Lautrec. Belleroche painted Lautrec’s portrait and they shared a favorite model, Lili Grenier, who also became Belleroche's mistress. Belleroche was revered by both the art critiques and the impressionist painters; in fact Degas purchased one of his paintings. He was one of the founders of the Paris Salon d’Automne, which in 1904 awarded him the honor of devoting an entire room to his work. He was also a leading figure in the field of lithography. Scholars believe that Belleroche never became as famous as his impressionist colleagues because, coming from nobility, he was independently wealthy and neither needed nor desired to accept commissions.  His passion was strictly for creating art for arts sake.

His paintings and lithographs are housed in the finest museums in the world (including the Tate Museum of London), and a room in the Musée D'Orange is dedicated entirely to Belleroche. The San Diego Museum of Art houses an exceptional collection of Belleroche's lithographs. We recommend their catologue, The Rival of Painting: The Lithographs of Albert Belleroche, published by the San Diego Museum of Att.

ALBERT LUDOVICI JR (1852-1932)

19th CENTURY OIL ON PANEL
6.75 inches by 4.5 inches, without frame

This artist signed, oil on panel, depicts a groom presenting his bride. It is a small but lovely and elegant painting, and is presented in a fine custom 22 karat gold leaf frame that we designed specifically for this piece.

Ludovici was a member of the British Academy of Painters, Sculptors and Engravers, and a member of the French school of painting.  He is best known for his genre paintings. However, his oeuvre also consisted of landscapes and interiors. He studied under the tutelage of his father, Albert Ludovici (1820-1894), and was active and resided in both London and Paris where he exhibited among James Whistler's circle. Ludovici was a colleague and close friend of Whistler, a fellow Society member, who is said to have influenced his art and his life.

Ludovici describes his love of coaching paintings and his painting of the Dickens Coaching Series (which were popular jigsaw puzzles in turn of the century England), in his book entitled, "An Artist's Life in London and Paris”.

CAMILLE JOSEPH ETIENNE ROQUEPLAN (1800-1855)
CAMILLE JOSEPH ETIENNE ROQUEPLAN, Pair of 19th century French Genre Paintings, Premier Lecon and La Cueilette, over seven feet tall

A FINE AND BEAUTIFUL
PAIR OF 19TH-CENTURY FRENCH GENRE PAINTINGS,
MEASURING OVER 7 FEET IN HEIGHT- directly from Paris

These lively genre paintings, created in the Rococo taste, capture the romance and charm of French country life, and probably were created circa 1855. (After 1835 Roqueplan began creating large-scale anecdotal pictures). Both paintings are signed, Clle Roqueplan. The fruit gathering scene measures 90.5 inches x 57.5 inches and the second painting, depicting a child riding on a goat, also with its frame, measures 90.5 inches x 52.5 inches. An important genre painter from the 19th Century French School, Roqueplan's paintings are part of the permanent collections in museums worldwide, including The Hermitage and The Wallace Collection.

This is the first time in 17 years that a large-scale pair of paintings by Roqueplan have been on the international art market. In 1989 a similar pair sold at Sotheby’s, Monaco. The sheer expansiveness of these paintings, with their rich colors, texture and movement are truly breathtaking! We are delighted to have acquired these beautiful and spirited works of art.

CAMILLE JOSEPH ETIENNE ROQUEPLAN, Pair of 19th century French Genre Paintings, Premier Lecon and La Cueilette, over seven feet tall

CAMILLE JOSEPH ETIENNE ROQUEPLAN, was born in Mallemort, Bouches-du-Rhône on Feb 18, 1800 and died in Paris, Sept 25, 1855. A student of Antoine-Jean Gros and Alexandre Abel de Pujol, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in February 1818, and first exhibited at the Salon in 1822; where he was a regular exhibitor until 1855. Considered by scholars to be an important genre painter from the early-mid 1800's French School, his oeuvre consists mainly of landscapes, marines, historical subjects and genre scenes in oils and watercolors. Roqueplan’s early paintings were small landscapes influenced by the work of R. P. Bonington, his contemporary at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and that of Eugene Isabel. In the mid-1830s he progressed to large-scale anecdotal pictures, which brought him much fame. In 1837 Roqueplan executed a Napoleonic epic painting in the manner of Gros, for the Musée d'Histoire at Versailles (Battle of Elchingem), and in 1841 he painted a series of historical paintings on the ceiling of the library at the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris. His plein air approach to painting nature influenced the Barbizon Painters, and later the impressionists.

An interesting note:

The same red dress worn by the artist's models in both of these paintings is also worn by the woman in Roqueplan's lovely painting titled, Rousseau and Madamoiselle Galley Gathering Cherries. The man in that painting also appears to be the same man that is in our painting. This piece, along with nine other paintings by Roqueplan, can be viewed on the website of the Wallace Collection, London, www.WallaceCollection.org
